Garden gnome politicos draw strong demand [25 Apr 2005|06:00pm]

amyakieran

LONDON (Reuters) - The country's political leaders have been transformed into garden gnomes.

Less than two weeks before an election, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Conservative leader Michael Howard and Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy have all been cast as knee-high plaster characters.

The trio are decked-out in their political party colours acting out their policies, said the digital television gardening channel, UKTV Style Gardens, who released the models.

"There is a gnome for every political persuasion. The exquisite Tony Blair model is digging around for non-existent weapons of mass destruction," a statement said.

"For those with an influx of snails and other garden beasties there is the scary Michael Howard gnome holding a "Keep Out" sign and for the more relaxed, there's a charming carrot-topped fellow sitting on a fence supping from a glass of ginger beer."

The channel has made only 10 sets of the political gnomes to be won in an online competition, but a spokesman said demand was strong and they were considering mass producing them.

I just got a new lawn gnome! He's playing the violin and he's super happy. I named him Bernard H. Shaw. He was sitting next to an identical twin that was playing the banjo, but seeing as how it's wrong to steal two from one house I took Bernie.

Down the street lives a gnome named Ralph,
A Gnome of the Lawn is he.
Intelligent, eccentric, and controlling,
He says, “The world is mine to seize!”

Every day he plans his quest for domination,
In the grass surrounded by birds and bees.
While snickering to himself softly,
He says, “The world is mine to seize!”

Ralph’s scheme has finally neared completion,
So his captor’s yard he leaves.
As he frolics animatedly into the horizon,
He says, “The world is mine to seize!”

He hitches a ride east to Wisconsin,
And somehow makes a bomb with liquid cheese.
As North America is smothered in gooey orangeness,
He says, “The world is mine to seize!”

Ralph ventures across the Atlantic and far across the lands,
Overthrowing governments as he may please.
Now that he is so close to victory,
He says, “The world is mine to seize!”

In his excitement the gnome forgets about Australia,
Where he has made numerous enemies.
A clan of kangaroos shoot him in the back with lasers,
And cry, “The world is now ours to seize!”

Garden Gnome Photo Contest! [25 Aug 2004|07:41pm]

melopene
Hi! Apparently I'm the new mod. *grin*

So, I'll start things off with a photo contest.

Take/photoshop pictures of lawn gnomes - they can belong to yours, your friends, or even some random person whose house you drive by. At any rate, make some creative lawn gnome photos. Funny groupings, poses, whatever strikes your fancy - but it must be your own work.

Post the pictures here within the next three weeks. On Sept 15, I'll select a handful of judges to vote on the pictures for photo quality and creativity.

The top three submissions will win some paid account time...

Good luck!

Hi,

I'm new here too. I was so happy to find a gnome community. Not many people understand my fondness.

This is an article from my local paper that was written a while ago. It's mainly about obsession, but I think it's cool. Hope you all like.

Naughty gnomes made to cover up [17 May 2004|03:25pm]

Wed 12 May, 2004 16:15

BARNSLEY (Reuters) - A man has covered up his lewd garden gnomes with painted-on swimwear after police warned him he faced arrest for causing public offence.

While most garden gnomes fish or enact scenes of bucolic tranquillity, ex-army sergeant Tony Watson's models in Barnsley, South Yorkhire, bared their breasts and buttocks, prompting complaints from the public.

"It is an offence to display something that is insulting or likely to cause distress," a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

"Although some people view the gnomes as a bit of harmless fun, we have to take complaints from members of the public seriously."

One of the gnomes now sports a polka-dot bikini, said local resident John Threlkeld, who passes the gnomes every day on his way to work.

"Tony used filler and paint to cover them up," he said.
